My works are inspired by petroglyphs, also known as rock carvings. The rustic nature of cast iron really plays well with the rustic simplicity of petroglyphs. I also like to add rock elements back into my work, where possible, as a tribute to the rock where the petroglyphs were originally carved.
Petroglyphs are normally associated with the American Southwest, however, they are found throughout the world. My current collection contains petroglyphs from Petroglyph Provincial Park (Ontario, Canada), the Coso Rock Art District (Coso Range, Mojave Desert, California), and Monument Valley (Arizona). I also have an original design based on the rock carvings of Newspaper Rock and the McConkie Ranch Petroglyphs.
And now a word from Wikipedia: The word petroglyph comes from the Greek words petros meaning “stone” and glyphein meaning “to carve”, and was originally coined in French as petroglyphe.
